When Karl Lagerfeld was told that Stella McCartney had been appointed to succeed him at Chloe back in 1997, he was quoted as saying: “Let’s hope she’s as gifted as her father.” While no one but Lagerfeld knows for sure what he meant by that comment, it is fair to assume that he wasn’t overly impressed with the young woman who had just graduated from college at that stage.
